Professor Valerio Zerbi is a systems neuroscientist and neuroimaging methodologist whose laboratory investigates how brain circuits and neurovascular systems fail in neurological and psychiatric disorders and how they can be repaired. His group develops and applies large scale functional imaging and neuromodulation approaches, including rodent fMRI and functional ultrasound imaging combined with optogenetic, chemogenetic and non-invasive electrical stimulation, to map brain wide connectivity, dissect neuromodulatory and vascular mechanisms, and test circuit level interventions in preclinical and translational models. The laboratory also advances stem cell-based cell replacement strategies and circuit repair paradigms, with the aim of establishing imaging and neurotechnology biomarkers that can guide future therapies for neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental conditions. He is widely regarded as a leading figure in multimodal preclinical neuroimaging and has secured multiple competitive grants and collaborations with industry partners to extend these approaches to pharmacological and mechanism based intervention studies.
